225,279 Imported Cars Newly Registered in 2016


[2017. 01. 05] The Korea Automobile Importers & Distributors Association (KAIDA) announced that the number of newly registered imported cars in December, 2016 was 20,117, up 3.9 percent from November, pushing the annual total for 2016 to 225,279, which represents a 7.6 percent drop from the 243,900 recorded in 2015.  

By brand, Mercedes-Benz had the highest number of new registrations throughout the year with 56,343 units, followed by BMW (48,459), Audi (16,718), Volkswagen (13,178), Ford/Lincoln (11,220), Land Rover (10,601), Lexus (10,594), Toyota (9,265), MINI (8,632), Honda (6,636), Chrysler/Jeep (5,959), Nissan (5,733), Volvo (5,206), Jaguar (3,798), Peugeot (3,622), Infiniti (3,201), Porsche (3,187), Cadillac (1,102), Citroen (924), Fiat (658), Bentley (170), Rolls-Royce (53), and Lamborghini (20).

The numbers, given in terms of engine capacity, of newly registered cars in a year were 124,277 (55.2%) in the 2000cc or below engine class, 83,643 (37.1%) in the 2000~2999cc engine class, 11,553 (5.1%) in the 3000~3999cc, 5,349 (2.4%) cars registered with engines over 4000cc and 457 (0.2%) cars in other categories (electric car). By country of origin, European brands topped the list with 171,569, taking up 76.2 percent, followed by Japanese brands with 35,429 (15.7 %) and U.S. brands with 18,281 (8.1 %). By fuel, diesel fuelled cars led the market with 132,279 (58.7 %), followed by gasoline cars with 76,284 (33.9 %), hybrids with 16,259 (7.2 %) and electric cars with 457 (0.2%).

As regards the type of buyer, of all 225,279 new imported car purchases, individuals outscored corporations in terms of new car purchases, with 144,883 cars (64.3%) as opposed to 80,396 (35.7%), respectively. Of the registrations by individuals, 41,248 (28.5%) were made in Gyeonggi, 35,938 (24.8%) in Seoul and 9,861 (6.8%) in Busan. Of those by corporations, 27,123 (33.7%) were made in Incheon, 15,700 (19.5%) in Busan, and 11,990 (14.9%) in Daegu.

The best-selling models in 2016 were the BMW 520d (7,910), the Mercedes-Benz E 300 (6,169) and the Lexus ES300h (6,112), in that order.

“The imported car market in 2016 has decreased from 2015 due to the sluggish sales of diesel cars caused by the Volkswagen emissions scandal, and the ceased sale of some models due to certification cancellation,” said Daesung Yoon, Executive Managing Director of the KAIDA.
